The World of Coffee Class

$40.00

NOTE: The price is per person with a four-person minimum for each class. All participants must be 18 years old or older.

This two-part class is designed for small group learning events and/or team-building experiences and will last approximately one-hour.

Part One: Your group will partake in a private conversation with Chuck about how coffee is grown, processed, and traded while tasting two unique (Chuck’s Roast exclusive) coffees brewed to exacting standards. Your group will learn about how different coffee processing methods, farming techniques, and terroir can dramatically impact a coffee’s flavor. With plenty of opportunities to ask questions, this is an engaging, interactive and fun learning experience as the group will also have an opportunity to compare their tasting notes.

Part Two: Chuck will take your group through a demo roast on his commercial drum roaster. Chuck will discuss the concept of a “roasting curve” and roast “profiles” while showing all the participants how a bean changes during the roasting process in real time and how a good roaster can get the very best out of a coffee bean. Each participant will take home a whole bean sample of the coffee they witnessed being roasted.

About Chuck: Chuck is considered one of the leaders of the Specialty Coffee industry and single-handedly started the third-wave coffee movement here in San Diego. In 2002, he founded Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, an elite coffee company known for souring exquisite beans directly from the people who grew it. An expert in Direct Trade, Chuck has been on well over 50 sourcing trips to 14 coffee-growing countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Sumatra and Ecuador, and he has worked with some of the very best coffee-growers in the world. In 2012, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters won Roaster of the Year, an award that recognized the company’s commitment to sustainable coffee-sourcing, coffee roasting excellence, and the company’s contributions to the coffee industry.

In 2024, Chuck founded Chuck’s Roast and Patton Coffee Consulting. Chuck’s Roast is the retail roasting arm of the company that affords Chuck the opportunity to continue the coffee-sourcing and roasting journey he started with Bird Rock Coffee while Patton Coffee Consulting is the education arm which allows Chuck, a teacher by trade prior to his coffee career, the opportunity to help others on their coffee journey with curated coffee tastings, roasting classes, and business consulting.
